Kwangju Temple Devoured by Flames

A temple in the South Korean city of Kwangju burned to the ground today, following what police suspect was some sort of electrical shortage, according to MBC TV [Kr]. Traditionally, Korean temples are made completely of wood and without nails; despite fire-fighter efforts the building had completely collapsed within 30 minutes.

Kwangju was the setting of a politically-fueled massacre in 1980, the 17th anniversary of which was commemorated less than three weeks ago. In other temple news, via The Marmot’s Hole, a North Korean temple celebrated it’s 3rd anniversary of restoration today.
